Newgarden survives to complete Iowa sweep

A late yellow flag couldn’t stop Josef Newgarden on his way to winning his sixth race at Iowa Speedway.

The Team Penske driver led 212 of the 250 lap contest and survived a late yellow flag to take his fourth oval win of the season.

Newgarden’s wasted little time muscling through the field from eighth place on the grid while teammate Will Power once again paced the field early ahead of Scott McLaughlin. Newgarden caught the pair of teammates and moved into the lead with a near three-wide pass in Turn 1 on Lap 31.

The majority of the race saw Newgarden run his motus operandi having little competition until the 100 laps when a yellow for Sting Ray Robb’s loose wheel triggered a yellow flag. The stoppage saw McLaughlin pit with Pato O’Ward for fresh rubber.

The gamble saw the pair pick up a few places on the restart but nothing to make a significant gain on Newgarden.

The final round of pitstops saw Felix Rosenqvist enter the fore with a quick pitstop which brought him right to Newgarden’s rear wing for the final stint.

The swede tried to no avail to pass Newgarden as the field ran through lapped traffic and looked settled for second place until Lap 240 when Ryan Hunter-Reay slapped the wall in Turn 4.

That set up a three lap dash as the lapped cars were moved out of the way and the pits remained closed.

Newgarden blitzed the field as Rosenqvist was inhaled by Power and Alex Palou on the restart and cruised to a .0750s margin at the checkered.

Power matched his best finish of the season by taking second place while Palou kept his points lead by taking third.

Rosenqvist held on to fourth while McLaughin struggled with a poor handling No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet to take fifth place.
