Scott Dixon masters fuel strategy to take victory at Gateway

Scott Dixon delivered a superb fuel saving performance to take his second straight win in the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at the World Wide Technology Raceway.

The fuel strategy was birthed after the Kiwi started 16th after receiving a 9 place grid penalty for changing an engine prior to the race weekend.

Dixon cruised through his first stint in 13th and inherited the lead on Lap 113 when Colton Herta made his second pit stop. Dixon stretched his fuel run make his third stop Lap 196 while his rivals all stopped for fuel.

That gave the lead over to Pato O’Ward who paced the field until lap 214 when he made his fourth stop. O’Ward’s McLaren teammate Alexander Rossi led until Lap 221 when the lead cycled back to Dixon.

Dixon led with Will Power in hot pursuit as the laps ticked away. Power was forced to stop on Lap 247 which allowed Dixon to run to the finish uncontested.

“It’s all these guys, man,” Dixon noted in victory lane. “Chip steers the ship. We took a pretty good grid penalty today. We had to go the alternate route, and it worked out perfectly. This team was perfect. They gave me the (fuel) number I needed to be getting, so massive thank you to everybody on the PNC Bank No. 9 crew.”

The win draws Dixon 74 points behind points leader Alex Palou, who finished seventh, heading into the penultimate round in Portland next weekend.

O’Ward ended the day in second place after running inside the top five for the race’s majority. Completing the podium was David Malukas, who finished second in last year’s Gateway contest.

Josef Newgarden’s championship hopes came to a halt when he slapped the Turn 2 wall on Lap 211, relegating him to finish 25.
