Tom Blomqvist optimistic heading into Laguna

Tom Blomqvist is itching at Laguna Seca this weekend after finishing his first NTT IndyCar Series race last weekend at Portland.

The Briton finished 24th following a speeding penalty during his second pit stop. He took solace in that he completed a race after his debut at Toronto ended in a crash after the first corner.

“It was a long day but the main goal after that mishap was to get the laps under my belt. So many things were new to me – the restarts, the pitstops sequence – the in laps the out laps. Also just getting a feel for the race pace.”

“Up until warmup everying is basically doing qualiyfing laps. In endurance racing, qualifying is less important. Where here, everyone thing is going full chat, 100% commitments all the way up until qualifying.

Despite his success in sportscars, the two-time Rolex 24 at Daytona co-winner admitted that he’s faced with having to learn, and unlearn, some driving techniques.

“I’ve for sure got some bad habits that I need to try and get out of my system.

“The prototype cars are very direct in their turning, with this thing it takes about a half hour to react in their input. I missed a corner (yesterday) because I’m trying to be too precise and smooth.

With the season finale at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca this weekend, Blomqvist aims to finish strong. He has some experience in his memory bank having raced at the 2.2-mile road course three times in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

He felts that a freshly paved blacktop has thrown a significant curveball into the weekend.

“Its a like a different track,” he said. “That old tarmac we used to race on – it was like ice. It was super hard on the tires. The cars always handled bad and it was a difficult place to drive.

“Now they put down this tarmac and we’re four seconds a lap faster – and to drive like that is insane. “

“Also knowing the track was a bit easier. I kind of know wh

Also, like having done the weekend before like I’m not I don’t feel like an alien in the car, which you know, but I just felt like I was a bit lost.
