Michael McDowell delivered Spire Motorsports’ first pole during qualifying for tomorrow’s Pennzoil 400 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The driver of the No. 71 Group 1001 Chevrolet rocketed to his seventh career NASCAR Cup Series pole with a lap of 28.883 seconds around the 1.5-mile oval.
“It’s great, it’s a lot of fun to come here and have a shot of being on the pole and executing perfectly,” said the 2021 Daytona 500 champion.
The lap bested three-time Vegas champ Joey Logano by a slim margin of .015s, while Logano’s Team Penske teammate Austin Cindric followed in third. 2009 race winner Kyle Busch ended up fourth while Erik Jones completed the top five and scored his best start at LVMS since 2018.
Christopher Bell’s quest to win four straight Cup series wins once again will begin from outside the top ten in 13th place.
2023 Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney crashed in practice and did not post a time. He starts his 17th Vegas start from 36th place.
