Felix Rosenqvist blasted past Scott McLaughin to take his second NTT IndyCar Series pole of the season at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
Scott McLaughlin drew first blood in the session and made a lap of effort of 1:07.0886. Scott Dixon besieged his fellow Kiwi on the next lap. Meanwhile Christian Lundgaard threw away a flyer when he slightly shortcutted the Corkscrew but recovered to set a flyer of 1:06.7478.
The Team Penske pair of Josef Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin double-teamed to the top with McLaughlin held the upper hand by lapping the 2.23-mile road course in 1:06.6513.
Rosenqvist was lurking in weeds and unseated McLaughlin by .007s with a cracking run of 1:06.6416s.
Lundgaard settled for third ahead of Newgarden while the Ganassi Pair of Dixon and Alex Palou locked out row three.
Juri Vips briefly led the session as times first came down on the red tires and ended up seventh but will start 13th due to an engine change. Rinus Veekay turned his best road course qualifying lap of the year to end up eighth on the grid ahead of Will Power in ninth. Romain Grosjean completed the top ten in his final run for Andretti Autosport.
Pato O’Ward ended up 12th after spinning in Turn 4 of Q2 and losing his fastest lap.
Argentine rookie Augustin Canapino barely missed the cut of the fast twelve by turning the 13th quickest lap but incurred a sixth place grid penalty. Another striking surprise was two-time Laguna winner Colton Herta in 15th.
