Santino Ferrucci has been drafted to fill in for the injured Jack Harvey in today’s Xpel 375 at the Texas Motor Speedway.
Harvey crashed hard coming off Turn 2 of the 1.45-mile oval late in yesterday’s final practice session. The damage forced the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team to roll out their backup No. 45 Hyvee Honda.
Harvey was initially cleared to drive but a further evaluation this morning took him out of the running.
“Per INDYCAR protocol, all drivers wear accelerometers that measure g-forces exhibited during an incident,” IndyCar said in a statement. “These get evaluated, fully, after each incident, and if the result of the g-forces surpasses the minimum threshold, drivers must be re-evaluated prior to returning to competition.
“Following the protocol, the driver of the No. 45, Jack Harvey, was re-evaluated this morning and was not cleared for racing. Harvey is working closely with the IndyCar medical team regarding next steps.”
Ferrucci, who resides in nearby Dallas, piloted the No. 45 Honda in five races last season with a best finish of sixth at the Indianapolis 500 and at Detroit.
