Team Penske has drafted Santino Ferrucci as a potential substitute driver for Josef Newgarden in this weekend’s Gallagher Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course.
Newgarden fainted outside his motorcoach shortly after yesterday’s HyVee Salute to Farmers 300 at the Iowa Speedway. He was airlifted to MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center and remained overnight.
A mechanical failure caused him to crash out inside the final 100 laps of yesterday’s race.
He was released and has returned to Nashville, TN, and will be evaluated by the IndyCar medical team on Thursday.
Ferrucci, a veteran of 43 NTT IndyCar Series starts, has substituted on two occasions this year – at Texas for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and at Detroit for Juncos Hollinger Racing. He turned a sporty performance at Texas coming from last on the grid to finish ninth.
He also raced for Dreyer and Reinbold Racing at the Indianapolis 500 alongside Sage Karam where he finished 10th.
The Woodbury, Connecticut native has two top tens at the IMS Road Course and has a best road/street course finish of 6th at Detroit driving for RLL.
He is also slated to race in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at IMS this weekend for Sam Hunt Racing.
